The Netflix era forced Nollywood to confront its own strengths and weaknesses. Pacing tightened. Production values rose. Subtitles became standard. These were mostly good developments.
But some things were compromised in the pursuit of global palatability. Local dialects were softened. Stories were reshaped to fit familiar genre templates.
Nollywood's strength is its specificity. The films that broke through globally did so not because they were less Nigerian, but because they were uncompromisingly Nigerian with world-class production values.
