Nollywood and Gender – Telling Women's Stories Without the Clichés

Nigerian cinema has a complicated relationship with female characters. For too long, women in Nollywood were either saints or villains, wives or witches—without the messy, contradictory complexity that makes characters human.

Films like Man of God and A Tribe Called Judah are challenging this. Their female characters make questionable decisions, hold genuine power, and exist beyond their relationships to male characters.

Market these films to women as the primary audience, not as a bonus demographic. Change the positioning, change the imagery, change the tone of the trailers. The audience will respond.
