Review: KJ Apa Finds Jimmy Stewart’s Quiet Fire in “Jimmy,” a Stirring WWII Portrait

KJ Apa steps into the well-worn shoes of James “Jimmy” Stewart and walks the audience back to the season of bruising service that reshaped the most beloved everyman in American cinema. Jimmy, directed by Aaron Burns and written by Justin Strawhand, arrives in U.S. cinemas on November 6, 2026, after a world premiere set for November 4 in Fort Worth, Texas, and a festival bow that began October 8 at Heartland. The roll-out even added early-bird screenings that began November 1, a nod to the Veterans Day calendar and the film’s service-minded pitch.

The film’s heart is not Hollywood gloss but the battle-worn spine behind it. Drawing on Stewart’s record as a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot who flew twenty missions over Europe and rose to colonel, the story traces his journey from the glow of an Academy Award for The Philadelphia Story to the near-emptiness he carried home, and then to the healing work of playing George Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. The official synopsis makes that arc plain, and the casting amplifies it, with Apa supported by Kara Killmer, Neal McDonough, Max Casella and Jason Alexander among others. Stewart’s daughter, executive producer Kelly Stewart-Harcourt, has already vouched for the portrayal, calling it “eerie” in its fidelity and adding, “I don’t see how they could have found anybody better.” Her seal of approval lifts the film above mere impersonation by suggesting family-sanctioned empathy.

If the talk around Jimmy has gathered momentum, it is because institutions closest to the release have put their credibility behind it. Fathom Entertainment, which is handling distribution, describes Apa’s work as a “brilliant performance” and frames the picture as a moving theatrical experience, while citing a festival run that yielded Audience Choice at Heartland, Best Feature at Washington West and a Newport Beach Spotlight Award for the lead. The company has also partnered with Vet Tix to underwrite free tickets for veterans and first responders, a gesture consistent with the film’s reverence for duty. With critics echoing that Apa does more than portray Stewart, and family testimony urging viewers to take him seriously, the stage is set for a nationwide opening that asks audiences to consider how private scars can deepen public art. Jimmy opens Friday, November 6, in theaters across the United States.
